When most people hear the words self-care, they think of spa days, bubble baths, skincare routines, candles, and maybe a glass of wine at the end of a long day.
While those things can certainly help us relax, I've come to realize that self-care goes much deeper than that.
At 62 years old and cancer-free for almost four years, I am incredibly grateful for every day. But if I'm being honest, getting older comes with its own set of worries. I find myself thinking about the health issues my parents faced and wondering if some of those conditions might eventually become part of my story.
As women, we spend so much of our lives taking care of everyone else. We care for our children, spouses, parents, grandchildren, friends, coworkers, and sometimes complete strangers before we ever think about ourselves.
Many of us are so busy worrying about everyone else that we forget to pay attention to our own bodies.
The truth is that one of the most important forms of self-care is learning to recognize when our bodies are trying to tell us something.
Here are five health warning signs that every woman should know.
1. Know the Signs of Sepsis
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to an infection causes damage to its own tissues and organs.
The scary part is that sepsis can develop quickly and often starts with symptoms that seem unrelated.
Watch for:
- Fever or very low body temperature
- Rapid heart rate
- Shortness of breath
- Extreme weakness
- Confusion or disorientation
- Clammy or sweaty skin
- Severe pain or discomfort
If you suspect sepsis, seek medical attention immediately. Early treatment can save lives.
2. Recognize the Signs of Stroke
A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted.
Remember the acronym FAST:
F – Face drooping
A – Arm weakness
S – Speech difficulty
T – Time to call 911
Other symptoms may include:
- Sudden dizziness
- Trouble walking
- Sudden severe headache
- Vision changes
- Confusion
Every minute matters during a stroke.
3. Heart Attack Symptoms Aren't Always What You Think
Many women assume a heart attack always involves dramatic chest pain.
For women, symptoms can be much more subtle.
Possible warning signs include:
- Pressure, tightness, or discomfort in the chest
- Pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, or back
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Lightheadedness
- Cold sweats
Never ignore symptoms because they don't fit the typical picture.
4. Pay Attention to Changes in Your Skin
Your skin can reveal a lot about your overall health.
Be aware of:
- New moles
- Changes in existing moles
- Sores that don't heal
- Persistent rashes
- Changes in color or texture
- Unusual growths
Early detection can make a tremendous difference, especially when it comes to skin cancer.
5. Don't Skip Your Annual Checkups
I know it's easy to put appointments off.
Life gets busy.
There's always something else that seems more important.
But routine screenings and annual checkups can catch problems before they become serious.
Make time for:
- Annual physicals
- Mammograms
- Colon cancer screenings
- Skin checks
- Eye exams
- Dental visits
- Blood work
Preventive care is one of the best investments you can make in your future health.
The Self-Care We Don't Talk About Enough
The older I get, the more I realize that self-care isn't selfish.
It's necessary.
For many years, I focused on everyone else's needs first. Like many women, I wore that responsibility as a badge of honor.
But after my cancer journey, losing my parents, and facing the realities of aging, I've learned something important:
You can't pour from an empty cup.
Taking care of your health isn't just for you. It's for the people who love you and depend on you.
So enjoy the bubble baths.
Use the fancy skincare.
Drink the good coffee.
But also schedule the appointment.
Get the screening.
Pay attention to the symptoms.
Ask the questions.
Listen to your body.
Because real self-care isn't just about feeling good today—it's about giving yourself the best chance to be healthy for years to come.
And as women, we deserve that.
